With Big Lol at the helm, Southampton finished a creditable fifth in the league in 1984-85. But for the post-Heysel European ban, they would have qualified for the Uefa Cup.
Notes
Look again: Mark Wright is actually David Armstrong in a strawberry blond wig. Saints’ squad that season was too small for FA regulations, so Armstrong was forced against his will to wear a wig and double up as the fictitious centre-back – this was McMenemy’s excellent wheeze.
Quirkily, Armstrong enjoyed much greater success as Wright – a few years later he would be an integral player in England’s back line at Italia ’90. To this day, no one knows how Armstrong added six inches to his height.
Imagine Mark Dennis getting hold of the ftbllr generation. Oh yes.
