In his first season as Sheffield Wednesday’s manager (in 1983-84), Howard Wilkinson oversaw their promotion to the First Division. The following year he led this lot to eighth, a bloody good job. ‘Oward went one better in 85-86, as the Owls climbed to fifth.

Notes

This was Lee Chapman’s first season at Hillsborough – look at him: Simon Le Bon on top, but sharp elbows and streetwisdom beyond his years down below. Wilkinson signed the Lincoln-born striker from Sunderland in August 1984, knowing that otherwise Wednesday would be light up front. Chapman’s…er…”rough play” yielded 63 league goals in his four seasons with the club, and in 1989 Wilkinson re-signed him for Leeds, with even better results.
