Glenn Hoddle, 55 today

It’s not exactly revelatory to say that Hoddle could play. He certainly knew it, and it’s unfortunate that Bobby Robson was never quite sure.

A pioneer of the shirt outside the shorts look, the very zenith of cool, it probably wouldn’t have looked the same on Paul Miller, and certainly didn’t on the many schoolboy imitators.

Hoddle is probably English football’s greatest narcissist. As Tottenham’s long-serving kit man Roy Reyland revealed in his recent book, Hoddle liked to roll up the waistband of his shorts, not once but several times, to show off a bit more leg. What sauce.

Anyway, this is just an excuse for some video – here’s an underrated Glenda classic closely imitated by Gazza a few years later, and below are other bits and pieces.
