Back in the top flight for the first time since the 1977-78 season, Newcastle finished the 84-85 campaign in 13th.

Notes

You can tell Steve Carney was an epic swordsman. Have you seen a cockier grin? It’s almost off his face.

Although he didn’t make the double-spread on this occasion, Paul Gascoigne made his first-team debut for Newcastle in 84-85, aged 17. Waddle, Beardsley and Gascoigne all started for England against West Germany in the epic semi-final at Italia ’90.

Another gorgeous kit. It’s all about the dramatic V-neck. Even Beardsley – what a thatch, too – looks good in it.

Wes Saunders is rock ‘n’ roll.

David McCreery  – by then – was a cross between weebl and space hopper.

Paul Ferris: truly a man of his time.
