A big nothing

What’s the point 1

We’ve all seen plenty of fights where we disagree with the judges’ decision, but every now and again, we see one that bears absolutely no resemblance to what happened in the ring. Boxing is such a sorry mess as to make football appear acceptable, and needs a method to prevent this in the future. Why not start by using a very small group of unfeasibly wealthy and trusted ex-fighters to judge big fights, and a board able to enforce immediate re-matches when a verdict is so palpably wrong? And while they’re at it, how about making fighters commit to facing whoever the board decrees in order to be licensed, with a tribunal system able to rule on purse-split?

Other than money, what on earth is to be gained by an Ireland-England friendly? The fixture won’t take place if the sides are drawn together in the tournament for which the game is meant to prepare them, and no other European side plays in remotely similar…er…style.
