The Chels finished a forgettable 14th in the First Division in 1986-87. With Dixon and Speedie up front scoring goals came easy enough, but a mundane back four and an 11-stone keeper wasn’t going to protect them from the division’s best attacks. So it proved, as they shipped 64 goals in the campaign – more than twice as many as runaway champions Everton.
When these pen pics were taken, Andre Villas-Boas was eight years old. Tropes, eh.
