On This Day: West Ham 0-4 Man City, 1969
Manchester City, FA Cup holders, dissected West Ham 4-0 at the Boleyn Ground, and poor Geoff Hurst then had to explain it all back to Jimmy Hill in the studio afterwards. Francis Lee rifled in the first from distance, before crossing from wide for Ian Bowyer to nod in the second. Bowyer headed the third (showing remarkable neck-strength) and Mike Doyle caressed in the fourth, but, as usual, it was Colin Bell’s victory. City’s best ever directed the whole performance: see his pass to Lee for the second, and the dance past Bobby Moore at 2.20 in the analysis clip. Also, enjoy the rabona from Lee – who had good feet for a big-boned man – at 5.18.
City went on to win the League Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup, but this was before the time of the megasquad: their league form suffered accordingly, and they won only five more that season, eventually finishing 10th.
Thanks to @JPBIndy and mcfcvideos for this.
