A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work

You, dear reader have never had it so good for so long.

The Guardian Sports section is going to the wall as they cut the standalone sections. Why? Because nobody’s paying for work anymore.

The nebulous thought of earning money through advertising has worked for – let us see – nobody.

No more, we say. No more.

From now on, whenever feel like it, or whenever you’ve got on our tits, or just to make a point, we’ll introduce a paywall on selected items.

It’ll be for the best stuff, and it won’t be very often. For now.

You have been warned.

I’m sympathetic to this but MuCash won’t let me add money from a UK credit card, it only seems to take cards from the US.

FUCK. Back to the drawing board.

Interesting concept and I hope it works out for y’all.

    Hey James,
I’m Vinay, one of the founders of MuCash. I’m actually adding support for non-US credit cards as we speak and it should be up within the hour! We’ve mostly been marketing to US based sites, and it caught us a bit by surprise.

Sorry about the trouble. Feel free to reach out to me at vinay@mucash.com if you have any questions or comments.

    Vinay

    It won’t. But it should.

I am not pleased by this, mainly because all of my non-essential income goes straight to booze and effigies of Suarez. But I applaud your principles, and I hope you find at least some (moral) success.

On the consumer level, you face a dilemma. Yes, a website adds value to a person’s life, but how much is that two minutes of entertainment worth? Compared to a movie, two hours (120 minutes) for twelve bucks, about one to five cents. But, if you charge such a small micropayment, you encounter the dilemma of consumer apathy – is it worth it to enter payment details for such a small sum? Also, getting payment info is a huge mental block.

On a technical level, you really risk screwing with Google and traffic. Nobody except the WSJ and NYT really know how a paywall messes with Search Engines. Will you block spiders? Will your wall differentiate between bots and humans? Is your tech good enough to distinguish? Those are questions with difficult answers or answers I don’t know.

    Best of luck though!
