Report Manchester United field joke boxing-day eleven
Ever the Christmas clown, Alex Ferguson has gone with a joke eleven for today’s boxing day game against Wigan. The man has long found football too easy, defending the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United for the sake of it, and now he’s using his team selections to make subtle political comments on the state of society.
The eleven players to face Wigan today are as follows: Lindegaard; Valencia, Carrick, Evans, Evra (c); Park, Gibson, Giggs, Nani; Hernandez, Berbatov. This is, let’s be clear, a classic Ferguson joke. Carrick, his best central midfielder, in central defence. What’s that about? It’s satire, obviously. We don’t yet understand quite what the joke is or why it’s so funny to Sir Alex, but we’re sure it is. Ferguson, after all, knows.
Of course, the fact that this eleven is part-joke, does not mean it cannot be criticised. Comedians should be original, Alex, and you’ve done this one before – remember . Try harder next time, then.
