Sunderland scrape past Middlesbrough to set up Arsenal tie
Sunderland edged out Middlesbrough in the FA Cup courtesy of an extra-time-winner from Stephane Sessegnon, and will face Arsenal at the Stadium of Light in the next round.
After Jack Colback opened the scoring in the 41st minute of a dull first-half, Boro regrouped after half time and struck back with Lukas Jutkiewicz’s first goal for the club. In extra time, with both teams looking fatigued, Stephane Sessegnon produced a fine finish through a mass of players to clinch the game.
Sunderland will now face Arsenal at home in the next round – a stern test, particularly after Martin O’Neill took the time to claim that his players have no chance of winning the thing. Arsenal will surely be quaking in their fluorescent boots. Sunderland may have to do it without their goalscorer too – Sessegnon picked up a knock in the game, of which O’Neill said: “Stephane picked up a knock at the end and came off, and we are hoping it is just cramp and that he does not miss out because he has not missed a game for us this year, which is sensational.”
