Napoli 3-1 Chelsea – as it happened
Chelsea have given themselves a big job to do at the Bridge after they allowed Cavani and Lavezzi to run riot at the San Paolo.

Full time: Napoli 3-1 Chelsea. That isn’t going to take the pressure off Andre Villas-Boas. Still, AVB is busy speaking to his players so he doesn’t have to listen to Jamie Redknapp whinge on about how cousin Frank should have played from the start, so that should cheer him up. The problem for Chelsea isn’t their manager, it is the shocking state of their defense. Torres may have been a waste of money at £50m but he still looks far better value than the £25m sent Benfica’s way for David Luiz. Gary Cahill looks unhappy next to the Brazilian and Branislav Ivanovic looks like he has totally forgotten how to defend. Chelsea will still feel they have a chance of beating Napoli back at the Bridge, they do have an away goal, but the pressure on the side is only going to increase after this performance.
92 min Drogba chests a long ball down to Frank Lampard. The midfielder thumps a ball towards the goal but De Sanctis is always saving it. Lamps neede to deflect that off of someone.
91 min They finally work the ball to Ashley Cole in some space, he fires a cross in, but Didier Drogba does the best bit of defending by a Chelsea player all night and takes it off of Sturridge’s left foot.
90 min Chelsea finally have the ball near De Sanctis’ goal but there are too many Napoli bodies back.
89 min Chelsea look more like conceding than scoring at the moment, the ball is stuck up near Petr Cech’s box.
88 min Chelsea have worked hard tonight, but they don’t look like a side capable of doing much in this tournament.
87 min Napoli fans are already whistling for the end of the game.
86 min Pandev shows why he doesn’t stay at a big club for very long. Gargano takes the ball wide, no one pressurizes him obviously, and he knocks a ball into Pandev on the edge of the box. Luckily for AVB’s men, he sends his effort out of the ground.
84 min Drgba has won himself a free-kick. Mata clips it in but Chelsea don’t look like doing anything with it. Cannavaro rises above Drogba and heads it away.
Tweet @footballfatties has some thoughts on the monobrow issue: ” there isn’t anything wrong with a monobrow, shavable if it needs to be”. Simple but effective, rather like Napoli.
82 min That was Hamsik’s last involvement. He is replaced by Goran Pandev, who has somehow found his way to Napoli.
80 min It should be four! Cavani and Hamsik combine to open Chelsea’s defense up but the eventual shot is cleared off the line by Ashley Cole. Brilliant football from Napoli’s attacking players. Once again, Chelsea’s defense wasn’t looking so special.
79 min The resulting corner almost results in a goal for Chelsea, but the ball pings around the box until a Napoli boot is put through it.
78 min Drogba manhandles Campagnaro until the Italian relents and gives away a corner. Drogba was barely in this game until Lampard came on.
76 min Chelsea are passing it around quite nicely, but they did this for ten minutes at the start of the second half. They are looking as industrious as Sheffield did when Thatcher was done with it. Only one side looks like scoring, and it isn’t the team from London.
74 min Cahill and Luiz look a bit chipper. That’s because Lavezzi has gone of to be replaced by Dzemalli.
72 min Neville is rubbishing this Napoli side, saying they aren’t the same proposition as the rather tasty looking Milan side that ended Arsenal’s hopes last week. This is a bit harsh. They may not be as exciting in pure football terms, but they are certainly effective.
71 min Ivanovic slips as he collects a long ball from the Napoli defence. That sums it up. Napoli just hoof it forward and the Chelsea defenders will do the rest.
69 min Lampard And Essien are coming on for Malouda and Meireles. AVB needs goals, but he has to make sure he doesn’t concede any more.
68 min Andre Villas-Boas should probably start prepping himself for some slightly judgemental columns in tomorrow’s papers. Quite what he is supposed to do with defenders like Luiz and Cahill though I don’t really know.
66 min Chelsea are in disarray at the back. Gary Neville is now defending David Luiz, when he has previously bee quite scathing of him. To be honest, Luiz isn’t the only person to blame. Cahill and Ivanovic have also been rubbish.
64 min. Goal! Napoli 3-1 Chelsea (Lavezzi) Chelsea are showing a flagrant disregard for Gary Neville’s advice. Luiz plays a poor back pass straight to Cavani, he promptly sends it straight through to Lavezzi who scores his second from the edge of the box.
62 min Hamsik is seeing a lot more of the ball for Napoli. He seems to be more cnetral with Lavezzi staying further up the field.
60 min Drogba goes close with a header. If Ray Wilkins was here, he’d undoubtedly be saying Chelsea are knocking on the door.
58 min This is probably the best spell Chelsea have had so far. For the first time they seem to be having a spell of possession that isn’t being broken up with attacks from Lavezzi and Cavani.
Email: More from Gez on the monobrow. An email wonderfully titled, “THE MONOBROW SHOWS LACK OF UNITY” explains:
“The monobrow shows a lack of unity in this team. It’s like letting your workmate walk around with his flies un-done. The right thing to do is pull them to one side and let them know.
They’ve let Jose walk around with that caterpillar above his eyes for years, not said anything and i’m sure had a good laugh about it as well (in private, though I doubt Terry was subtle). Think that sums up the Chelsea ethos nicely.”
54 min What a let off for Chelsea. Ramires, I think, gives the ball away in his own half. Cavani spots Lavezzi racing free and plays a ball through to him. Cahill once again looks like the man to lead England’s defense at Euro 2012 as he watches the ball roll past before remembering what he is supposed to do and chasing after the striker. Luckily for Chelsea, Lavezzi managed to put it wide.
51 min Malouda goes close with a first time shot after Mata chests the ball down to him. A bit chaotic this. Saying that, though, neither side actually look like they might score.
50 min Gary Neville has just described this as a basketball match. He isn’t too far wrong, neither team seems too fussed by the idea of defending.
49 min Chelsea finally string some passes together but when the ball finally reaches Mata he is surrounded. He wins a corner though and the resulting header is cleared off the line by Napoli.
47 min Neither looks like they have changed much. Mata looks the liveliest attacking option for Chelsea, but they don’t seem to be getting the ball to him enough.
Half time. Chelsea are back out. As tradition dictates Napoli should join them in a minute. This could be a big half for Andre Villas-Boas, but then it might not be as he doesn’t seem to think his job is on the line.
Half time. If my flowing prose has not painted a perfect picture of the three goals in that first half, head here to 101 Great Goals for some video updates. But come back, or you’ll miss another email from Gez complaining about Ivanovic’s strangely well groomed eyebrows.
Half time. Napoli 2-1 Chelsea. Chelsea seemed to have the measure of a threatening Napoli side when Mata put them one up. However, the attacking abilities of Napoli’s front three were made to look even better by the poor defending of Cahill, Ivanovic and Ramires. First Lavezzi scored after Ramires gave him too much space on the edge of the box, then Ivanovic and Cahill forgot about the giant lumbering forward standing behind them and let Cavani race past them to meet a cross four yards out.
46 min Petr Cech looks pretty annoyed, he has pulled off a couple of great saves to keep Chelsea in this, but he can’t do anything if his defenders let Cavani have a free header from 4 yards out.
45 min Goal! Napoli 2-1 Chelsea (Cavani) That is too easy for Napoli. A beauty of a cross across the face of goal and Cavani races at full pace to the back post. Horrible from Ivanovic, and not great from Cahill. He was allowed to run right past them on to the cross.
43 min Someone give Gary Neville the Chelsea job. He has just explained how to beat Napoli. “Man-mark Cavani, stay close to LAvezzi, close down Maggio and produce a bit in the final third and you’ll win this three or four one”. So simple, Andre, so simple.
40 min Paolo is DEFINITELY the worse Cannavaro. He seems to forget that he is a professional footballer and watches with interest as Ramires walks past him with the ball. Luckily for the less-Cannavaro Ramires tonks it over the bar, Baggioesque.
39 min That was Lavezzi’s first Champions League goal, and that was a cracking way to get off the mark. 20 yards out and he whipped it around the imperious Cech.
37 min Goal! Napoli 1 – 1 Chelsea BOOM! Lavezzi finally decides he is bored of setting up Cavani and so works himself into a bit of space and curls the ball around Petr Cech.
34 min Nice running from Sturridge. Drogba gives him the ball on the right and the young Englishman drops his head and runs straight for the Napoli goal. Mata is unmarked but there are four Neapolitan (thanks Joey) defenders in the way. The resulting corner goes close as Krusty the Klown* steams in and heads over the bar.
*David Luiz.
33 min Napoli have probably looked the better team so far. Petr Cech has certainly been the busier ‘keeper.
32 min All is going well for Joey Barton’s pre-match prediction. The oracle has declared on Twitter that the “Neapolitans” will win 3-1. Someone really should stop him from going on wikipedia.
30 min Sky’s commentators have just declared that Gary Cahill looks like hs is still learning to defend. Another great purchase from the money men at Chelsea.
29 min Mata has injured himself somehow and he doesn’t look well. Another change for AVB?
27 min Goal! Napoli 0-1 Chelsea (Mata) Well, that should get the stadium going. Cannavaro – the less good one – made a mistake by mis-kicking clear a cross from Sturridge. The ball spooned up and fell to Mata. Mata couldn’t miss and slid the ball into the back of the net. He was only six yards out, so he literally couldn’t miss.
24 min Napoli are more than happy to let Chelsea have the ball in their half. Chelsea can’t seem to get it anywhere near the box, whilst Napoli can break into an attack ridiculously quickly. This could be a long game…
22 min Hamsik sends a decent ball in, but Cech leaps over his inept defense and thumps the ball clear.
21 min Corner for Napoli…
19 min Whatever you think of John Terry, this Chelsea defense does look a bit of a shambles without him. Napoli are opening them up with no trouble. The tactic of give the ball to Lavezzi, let him run 30 yards towards goal then he can lay it off for Cavani to have a strike is working wonders for Napoli so far.
Email What if a monobrow’s are what this fractured Chelsea team could draw together over, Gez? Someone get AVB on the phone.
Email Gez Errico is sad to see Bosingwa depart:
“FINALLY he’s pulled it, I hope it’s actually exploded into a million pieces and we never have to see him and his irritating monobrow on the pitch ever again. Also hope its contagious and Malouda catches it..the hamstring injury not the monobrow”
14 min Gary Neville is warning that Ashley Cole isn’t used to being a substitute so this new experience could make it tough for him to settle in. How closeted must a footballer’s life be if being a substitute is a daunting new experience?
13 min Lavezzi and Cavani combine once again, but Cavani is just offside. Napoli’s front two are causing real problems for Ramires, Luiz and Cahill.
10 min Grame Souness will be pleased. Bosingwa has done his hamstring so Ashley Cole is coming on to play at left-back. AVB gives him a quick talking to before he comes on, which Cole seems to be taking genuine interest in. That’s odd, I thought he hated the Portuguese manager.
9 min Cavani goes close, but Cech sticks out a leg to send the ball away. The ball is played over Cahill and Ivanovic is nowhere to be seen. If Chelsea’s defence keep leaving that amount of space, Cavani will score.
7 min Napoli are captained by Paolo Cannovaro, yes the brother of Fabio. In true Phil Neville/Jack Charlton style, he is good but just not quite as good. And he’s balder, which must be irritating.
5 min Drogba is down after a clash of heads. He is up and will probably be ok. Imagine how deflating it would be for AVB if after making this big statement he was forced to bring Torres on after five minutes.
2 min The moment Chelsea get the ball the stadium erupts in boos and whistles. Surely that isn’t going to put off this Chelsea team? They’ve all played away in Europe before.
1 min Napoli have started well. They know if they get it near the box, Lavezzi and Cavani can do the damage. Particularly when Luiz is marking them.
Napoli get us under way and they are straight into Chelsea’s half.
Thank god Terry isn’t playing. Napoli’s players are kissing the mascots before the leave the pitch.
Stadio San Paolo: The much fabled atmosphere inside the Stadio San Paolo seems pretty raucous, but I don’t think it is quite the blisteringly hostile atmosphere that should scare visitors into defeat before a ball is kicked. It is an impressive stadium though and as the champions league theme tune blasts out you can’t help but get a little excited. Only a little, mind you.
Chelsea are warming up. Some of the players are smiling and joking. Ashley Cole looks like has just made a joke. Come on guys, you are all supposed to be deeply upset with everything going on around you.
Didier: Geoff Shreeves has given Didier Drogba a pre-game grilling. He’s unearthed such earth shattering revelations as Didier’s thoughts that it would be good if they could score in the away-leg, and if they can’t get a goal, only losing 1-0 would be good to take home. Thanks Geoff.
Reaction to the teams: Sky are treating the Chelsea team as if it was a deeply personal insult. Jamie Redknapp seems particularly hurt to see Lampard & co on the bench. Graeme Souness is just angry about the whole situation, in fact, he is just angry about everything. Gianfranco Zola seems rather pleased to be there and doesn’t seem to have had the same pre-game briefing to insist Andre Villas-Boas knows as much about football as the goalpost that has sent John Terry to hospital.
Try not to laugh: John Terry will be out for the next six weeks. He won’t be available for the England game against Holland. The previous two weeks need not have happened. Unfortunately, it has, and we will never get them back. I wonder what Don Fabio thinks about it?
Evening: Well, that is a statement from AVB, isn’t it? Twitter is already crawling with people calling it a suicide note, rather than a team sheet. To be fair to Villas-Boas he has got Cech in goal, Ramires and Malouda in the middle with a front three of Sturridge, Drogba and Mata. Now, I don’t want to put my neck on the line, but the world of Twitter may have just over reacted a little bit. Chelsea may have a weak defense with Luiz and Bosingwa in it, but it is hardly like Villas-Boas has sent out the kit-man. though, having seen David Luiz play…
Chelsea will have to battle a talented Napoli side and a ferocious home crowd, but come on, we’ve been here before haven’t we. Chelsea will head home with a draw and then Frank Lampard can deflect the ball off the referee’s arse in the final minutes of the second leg to take them through.
Andre Villas-Boas has sent out a statement with that team selection, let’s find out if he is asking for his P45 or if the completely unfazed Portugese does actually know what he is doing.
Napoli: De Sanctis, Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica, Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Zuniga, Hamsik, Lavezzi, Cavani. Subs: Rosati, Grava, Dossena, Dzemaili, Fernandez, Pandev, Britos.
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Bosingwa, Ramires, Meireles, Malouda, Sturridge, Drogba, Mata. Subs: Turnbull, Cole, Essien, Lampard, Torres, Mikel, Kalou.
