Porto report Manchester City for being mildly amusing

In the wake of Manchester City’s 4-0 victory over Porto, the Portuguese club are reportedly preparing to issue an official complaint to UEFA about Manchester City’s fans chanting “you’re not incredible” at Brazilian striker Hulk.

In a ridiculously petty move, the Porto complaint is believed to be in ‘retaliation’ for Manchester City reporting racist chanting from the leg of the tie played in Portugal. The club then claimed that the chants were merely both fans singing “Kun, Kun, Kun” and “Hulk, Hulk, Hulk” which “could easily be confused for racist chants.” On what grounds Porto will argue that City’s chanting was inappropriate are far from clear.

The most depressing thing about this issue is that it will give ammunition to those who seek the right to continue with racist and homophobic chants – the “you can’t say anything these days” brigade. In reality, this is obscuring that very issue – actions like these are at best trivialising racism and at worst an awful tit-for-tat exchange which show a total disregard for any real progress in football. The worst aspect of this season hasn’t been the racism, but the way those who have reported it have been treated.
