Miroslav Stoch – Amazing Goal: Fenerbahçe v Gençlerbirliği

Imagine the self-belief required to have a team-mate cross the ball directly to you, waiting on the edge of the area, from a corner. The message is: I’m good enough to hit this full on the volley and score with it – from this far out and with half a dozen opposition players running at me. Imagine being that confident.

Miroslav Stoch obviously doesn’t have to imagine, as he pulled this stunner out in a Turkish league game for Fenerbahçe yesterday.

The only problem once a player has scored a goal like that is where to go next. Given that Stoch is probably no Zidane, and therefore won’t be doing things like this every week, it’s likely that he has just reached his footballing peak, which, given the kind of people footballers tend to be, may also be the peak of his life. The best moment of Miroslav Stoch’s life might well have just passed: every step he takes now is just another one closer to death. A minute’s silence for Miroslav Stoch, then, please.
