A Castigation: Kenny Dalglish and Arsene Wenger

Kenny Dalglish – I checked and it’s the same one – is offering up that shirt sponsorship deals are the new points; a little further back in time and Arsene Wenger was suggesting that fourth place in the Premier League is the new A Trophy. Bah. Now that the managers are spouting business talk, this shizzle really has gone too far for my taste.

The thing is, managers aren’t supposed to care about the chairman’s/transnational company’s business plan. Perhaps David O’Leary took it a little far at Leeds – unless he blew millions just to prove my future point… – but ideally managers are to keep asking for money to spend until someone says no, oblivious of what it all means in terms of profit; that way the audience can be too. Because occasionally it’s nice to consider that clubs are looking to win for the sake of winning, not the ol’ naked profiteering aspect, y’know?

The awareness guns are out now, bursting bubbles everywhere. Wenger and Dalglish think it’s alright to speak about profit as a legitimate aim and next they’ll begin to give powerpoint presentations on how much money they’ve made their clubs during their time in charge – as Rafael Benitez happens to be doing. At that point, how the eff are the fans supposed to pretend that this isn’t all just an exercise in money changing hands?
