Football is happening again

More football! Now! And in a bit!

Remember last year, all that racism? And the racism? And then the racism on the internet? Well, it’s not going away, not by a long, white chalk, because Luis Suarez is still about, preaching victimhood, and Liverpool fans are still about, turning Luis Suarez into Joan of Arc. Beyond suicide, there’s no answer to this. This is what football is now. It’s tweets, racism, and sometimes racist tweets or tweets about racism. Where is the dignity in football or football writing? It’s certainly not here, is it?

Can you cast your mind back to last year and think of a time when there was a good goal, or a good bit of skill that you liked? No, of course you can’t. All you can remember is a montage of race hate and racial discourse. This is the 2011/12 season in memories: Nelson Mandela, Ku Klux Klan hoods, John Terry, Luis Suarez, Adolf Hitler, Robben Island, Native Americans in casinos, thousands of comments under the blogs in Comment is Free about Israel and/or Palestine, The 2 Tone Record Label, Carol Thatcher and a choc ice.

Now that we’re just 100 words away from the word requirement, I can feel the cool beer in the fridge calling me. There’s just eighty words to go now, and I can also feel the need to go home and start sobbing at the pointlessness of it all. It’s overwhelming. This season, there will be more football, and I’ll be required to pay more attention to it than ever before, so I’m making a sincere request. Stick to the nice goals and good skills, and don’t do racism. Not only is it unnacceptable Bee Ess, but I cannot be bothered to write about it anymore.
